How To Look After Pregnant Mother And New Born Pups

Firstly, we don't encourage breeding.
Secondly, this topic is posted for members who brought home a pregnant female hamster without knowing.

Pregnant mother needs lots of protein and nutrition. It is important to take note of her diet.
Give hardboiled egg white, tofu (raw) or mealworms (live or those in packet as treats is acceptable) etc.

Prepare to take off the wheel and other toys/accessories as it might be harmful for the pups.
If the wheel is still in the cage/tank, after giving birth the mother might 'drag' her babies up to the wheel for a run, which is fairly dangerous for new borns.

Make sure the area the mother and pups are is at a quiet environment with not much distraction.
Mothers can be very protective of their pups.
If they sense any danger nearby, the mothers will eat up her pups.

Even after birth, make sure the mother is having enough protein and nutrition, cos if she is not having enough of both, she might eat up her pups in order to get back the protein and nutrients she has lost.

Never ever touch new born pups.
Because after you touch it, your smell will be on the pups.
The mother will think the pups is not hers and thus neglect it or ended up eating them instead.

Change the bedding only after the pups are around 2 to 3 weeks old.
However, you do not have to worry about giving food or topping up of water, these can be done daily.
However, for the changing of bedding is a big no no.
You can only change the bedding after 2 to 3 weeks after the birth of the pups even if it stinks.
